The point of this blog is to have in writing (typing?) everything i have learned so far in my first real attempt to learn the japanese language. This blog is a place where i can refer back to things that i have learned, in my own words and mabey can also help other people who are learning japanese.

To ask what something is - Kore/Sore/Are wa nan desu ka?
Kore - something that you have/is near you
Sore - something that they have/is near them
Are - something that is far from both of you

you can be a little more specific by replacing the re with no. Kore>Kono
Sore>Sono
Are>Ano

desu - similar to "is" (you can change wa to mo and it becomes is also)(this probably isnt right but once i learn sentence stucture i will understand exactly why, but thats how it is for now)
ka - add this to make it a question - similar to adding is to the beginning of the sentence. (so without ka you have a statment. Are wa biru desu - That is a building)

Watashi wa phil desu. I am phil. - (If introducing one's self, watashi wa can be left out cuz its implied)

watashi - "I" or "me" - used when referring to one's self
anata - "you" - used when referring to the person you are speaking to.
desu - see above.
So this sentence is like - I phil is (Its a literal translation so of course it dosent make perfect sence, they have different sentence structure but this is a way to think of it so that you use the correct words)

(It seems that the wa article and desu work togeahter, cuz you can replace wa with different things like mo; so you have (using the sentence "Are wa biru desu". - That is a building, or that is also a building.

no - shows posession. Similar to adding 's to the noun before it, or like de in spanish.

Sore wa Jack-san no isu desu. - That is Jack's chair.

so combine two things we just learned: Sore wa watashi no desu. That is mine. or watashi no desu - It's mine.

Kore wa dare no desu ka?
dare - who
So the sentence is who's is this?

To say taht something is not: change desu to dewa arimasen
Sore wa Jack-san no isu dewa arimasen. - That is not Jack's chair.
Kore wa watashi no dewa arimasen. - This is not mine.

Random politeness things/phrases:
Hajimimashte - Said when meeting someone for the first time
Dozo yoroshiku - Its nice to meet you (just dozo is ok too i think...)
Domo sumimasen - sorry sumimasen - my bad (also has other uses)
Domo arigato gozaimasu - Thank you. Arigato - good looks

A note to those studying with me. I think that if we do blogs, one episode a day should be our goal because the videos are getting more complex and these take time and help to hammer in the material, and we should read each other's each day to review again and mabey get tips to remember things.
